Projects

At the beginning of May there were two major projects outstanding.

(1) Delivery of the new suite
(2) My projects to recover the corner table, pouffe and make cushion covers.

We had a phone call yesterday morning to say that the suite should be delivered next week (hopefully!) so that meant I had to get out the sewing machine, and the pliers, hammer, screwdrivers and staple gun!

Project 1

Recover the corner table. It was previously covered to match the old suite. Now it's going to match the curtains instead.

Here's the corner table as it was.

I had to remove a great many staples. You don't want to see the state of my fingertips this morning! I took off and unpicked the old cover and used it as a template.

Then I forgot to take photos! But here's the finished result.

One done, two to go!

Project 2

Recover the storage pouffe. This was trickier, so I decided to do the easy bit first. Here's the pouffe and the fabric.

Covering the base wasn't too much of a challenge. The end result was good.

The next bit was more 'fun'! The centre of the top cushion had a button which was tensioned through the foam of the seat and hooked into place. I really didn't want to untie the tensioning cords because I didn't have any tools suitable for putting them back through the foam again. I managed to detach the button by kneeling on the cushion until it flattened sufficiently to let me unhook the button. I recovered it. Note that wine has been added to the proceedings at this point. It was nearly dinner time!

Getting the button back in place after the fabric was in situ was impossible so I had to the lay the fabric on the cushion, then get Hugh to kneel on it while I swore and got jabbed by the pins but eventually the button was hooked back in the centre. That meant the rest of the cushion fitting had to be hand sewn. To be honest, there wasn't much alternative due to the shape.

Lots of pins later it was trimmed and pinned and ready for my needle. Thankfully somewhere in the dim and distant mists of time I acquired an upholstery needle. That made the job much easier.

And then it was done! I'm going to be honest and say I was really very happy with this result, I had no idea how I would do it when I started but it worked out so much better than I expected even if it did take five or six hours!

Project 3

The VERY EASY CUSHION covers.

These are so incredibly easy to do it must be cheating in some way. One piece of fabric, two seams and that's it. No zips, buttons, hooks or Velcro.

Lay the fabric on the table, right side up. Fold in one side and turn back on itself. Do the same with the other side making sure there is an overlap of several inches.

Pin two seams top and bottom. Obviously you make the dimensions appropriate for the cushion you are covering!

Stitch the seams, and turn inside out. hey presto, cushion covers!

And I'm done. All we need now is the suite.
