21st December 2013

My friend Val had a special birthday this year and both boys made sure they were home to celebrate. Val looked after the boys for over ten years while I was at work and I always say she deserves half the credit that they turned out as well as they did. (Possibly more than half, but I'll steal some of it!)

Bolsover Castle ~ 1st December 2013

After Hugh and I left Alexander and Steph following his graduation, we stopped over in Derbyshire with the intention of visiting Bolsover Castle. Why? Because some friends told us there was porn on the walls!

There was - sort of. The master of the house (Sir William Cavendish), had two little retiring rooms for contemplation. It is easy to work out what he was contemplating in one of them!

The castle keep still stands and has been restored to what it would have looked like hundreds of years ago. The great halls and dining rooms are ruins now. The view from the walls is magnificent.

Swansea ~ 8th ~ 10th November 2013

Way back then (yes, I am that far behind) we visited Robert in Swansea. His flat is ideally situated and within 10 minutes walking distance of the university, the main shopping mall, a gym, his hairdresser and the retail park.

The only longer journey he has is to cadets which is through a not so nice area and takes about 40 minutes. Luckily, the female warrant officers seem to be happy to give him a lift home when cadet meetings finish.

Swansea is really rather nice. )

Queen Mary 2 ~ 27th October ~ 4th November 2013

Crossing the Atlantic on an ocean liner probably sounds very indulgent, but once you're on board everything except alcohol is free and our crossing included FREE Transatlantic flights. Overall, flying to America, spending another eight nights in hotels and eating out all day, everyday, would have cost us just as much as returning by sea. It's also possibly the best way to relax - ever!

New York 27th October 2013

We left Pennsylvania on the Sunday morning and completed our journey to New York. After travelling 1,091 miles since we arrived ten days earlier we handed the car back to Alamo at Newark and Robin and Erin came to pick us up.

We had lunch in Brooklyn, visited a Sunday market and then finally it was time to get on board the Queen Mary 2 for our voyage home.

This was our second trip with Cunard and I loved that when we went on board they said 'Welcome back'. A nice touch.

Pennsylvania 25th ~ 27th October 2013

Our next stop was Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where we met up with Leanne and Matt.

A bookshop, the steelworks, fancy cars, a ghost walk! )

Gettysburg ~ 23rd ~ 25th October 2013

Gettysburg was amazing. No other word for it. We had an incredible day, visiting the museum, seeing the various video presentations and then touring the battlefield and actually visiting the spots where the various troops had been arrayed.

The following day we visited the town itself, saw the houses that still have the pock-marks from bullets in the brick work and bought souvenirs. One of the highlights of the trip to the town was finding a real American diner (just like in the movies) and even better, a train went past! That made Hugh's day!

19th - 21st October 2013

Our 'summer' holiday in 2013 was in the autumn and involved a 1,000 mile road trip through the USA and a transatlantic sea crossing to the UK.

The Leadenhall Building - a unique tour

At one minute to four on the 11th of July, I received a phone call at my desk in the office.

If you can be at reception in two minutes, you can have a tour of the new building. Don't bring anything, no phone, no camera, no jacket or you won't get in.

I dropped everything and ran to the lift.

Five minutes later I was dressed in heavy boots, gloves, a high viz jacket and a hard hat and was on a tour of the building that will be our new head office.

We travelled up in the goods hoist (think metal cage!) and started on the 45th floor which is basically just concrete. No glass, no walls, just concrete floor and ceiling and a stunning view over London.

Projects

At the beginning of May there were two major projects outstanding.

(1) Delivery of the new suite
(2) My projects to recover the corner table, pouffe and make cushion covers.

We had a phone call yesterday morning to say that the suite should be delivered next week (hopefully!) so that meant I had to get out the sewing machine, and the pliers, hammer, screwdrivers and staple gun!

Sunday 27th January

The temperature rose overnight, and so did the canal and the river.

To be honest, sharing the pictures is the easiest way to describe what we saw.

This is the overflow from the canal. It's usually a trickle of water and a sweet little waterfall.

Saturday 26th January

H and I thought we'd take a walk along the canal as it was a nice sunny day. Unfortunately, we soon realised that the ice on the tow path meant we would be more likely to end up in the canal, so we gave up after 20 minutes. It was pretty though.
